Morehead Health Centre Launch

The Morehead Health Centre is solar-powered and also has a desalination plant and in-built filtration system providing clean water for the facility.
SDP has opened the newly upgraded Morehead Health Centre, delivering modern health services to over 30,000 people in one of Western Province’s most remote communities. This K52 million project is a major milestone under the Gutpela Community Strategy 2025–2030.
On March 10 over 1,000 people gathered to celebrate the official opening of the newly upgraded Morehead Health Centre in South Fly District. Located in one of Western Province’s most isolated communities, the new health centre is set to serve over 30,000 people within the Morehead catchment.
Speaking at the event, SDP Board Director, Dame Meg Taylor highlighted the significant effort behind the project, which took over two and a half years, 15 ship voyages, and 121 workers to complete, at a cost of K52 million.
The facility includes a wide range of essential services: inpatient care, maternity and labor wards, pharmacy, laboratory, dental care, and an operating theatre for minor surgeries. It is also equipped with a desalination and water filtration system and runs on solar power—ensuring continuous operations in a challenging environment.
Minister for Health Hon Elias Kapavore, who attended the event, praised the facility and expressed his commitment to supporting its upgrade to a Level 4 district hospital. This will increase staff numbers and extend service delivery capacity.
The Morehead Health Centre is a major milestone under SDP’s Gutpela Community Strategy 2025–2030, which aims to anchor development efforts across Western Province. It complements ongoing programs including health patrols reaching over 78,000 people across the province.
