Family Farm Teams Training

Over 40 SDP participants attended the three days training.

It was an exciting three days learning about Family Farms in Balimo. Developed by Professor Barbara Pamphilon from the University of Canberra, Family Farms is about building the potential of smallholder farmers to positively transform their family incomes.

Professor Barbara, together with master trainer Dr Josephine Saul Maora, delivered the hands-on workshop, equipping our health, agriculture and community relations teams with tools to help families across Western Province strengthen food security and improve livelihoods through cash cropping and subsistence farming.

“I learnt that strong families grow strong farms when men, women, and youth work together as equal partners”, said participant Simon Peter. “They cultivate not just crops, but lasting livelihoods and resilient communities”.

Key topics covered included:
– Developing family budgets to run smallholder farms
– Improving nutrition and;
– Promoting shared decision-making at home

As part of the Gutpela Community Strategy 2025-2030, the training will be adapted into a tailored program called Gutpela Family Team.

The Gutpela Family Team is part of our Resilience program strategy to help support and strengthen families and communities to achieve their financial and economic potential through good nutrition, income generation, financial literacy and disaster resilience.
